# Beginning of Revision

At university, revision is a lot different than at school. At school you do every past paper, memorise the course and then go in repeat what you’ve done a million times and you are done – thank you 90%. All changes at university. You have so many exams in so many different subjects (especially doing MORSE) that it is basically impossible to learn every part of the syllabus. You have to take priorities and try and take maximum marks while focussing on what you like to do and what you want to focus on next year. Oh and getting 70% is the new 95%.

This year we did an exam in Mathematical Statistics A in January which means I have one less exam this summer. When I return my exams are Mathematical Methods and Mathematical Analysis III. Anyone who has done any mathematics at Warwick dreads the word analysis. Just because it is very difficult and the number of skills tested is large. Analysis is about the mathematics that you’ve seen a lot of but proving it to be true in certain spaces. Analysis III took this to all new spaces specifically Banach Spaces if you’d like to look them up. Methods on the other hand is the most like A-level as it takes all of the maths you do at A-level and shows how to do integration in n-dimensional spaces, differentiation in n-dimensions, some more linear algebra and an introduction to metric spaces – which fortunately overlaps a little bit with analysis; Banach spaces are special forms of a metric space.

After that, I will have four/five weeks to revise for my other modules while doing one final module along side. It is important that I get as much revision done for each to maximise marks. The other modules are: Mathematical Economics 1A, Mathematical Programming II, Linear Statistical Modelling, Foundations of Finance, Mathematical Statistics B and Stochastic Processes. So not too many exams but each module is rather large. I will struggle most with Mathematical Statistics B as it is totally different to other modules as it is classical statistics. This means that some of the measures we use are not universally true which is counter-intuitive to mathematical thinking. There is a large overlap with Linear Statistical Modelling though so hopefully I will pick it up.

The one other module that I am absolutely dreading is Mathematical Programming II. This is a kind of decision maths type module. It is a business school module that deals with specific algorithms but I feel that it is just very boring and really isn’t the type of maths I enjoy. I guess that is one of the benefits of MORSE; I know what maths I love and what I despise because we do such a wide variety. I’m looking forward to choosing the type of maths that I enjoy specifically next year although I had such a wide-range of choice this year.

So it’s time to officially start revision. I’ll try and keep you updated on my progress.
